General Overview

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic Prep Cook to join our team. Working under the supervision of our Executive Chef, the Prep Cook is responsible for Cook and preparing a variety of food products including meats, seafood, poultry, vegetables, sauces, stocks, bread, and other food products using a variety of equipment and utensils according to the Daily Prep List.

Essential Functions

  • Refer to the Daily Prep List at the start of each shift for assigned duties.
  • Understand and comply with standard portion sizes, cooking methods, quality standards, and kitchen rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Clean and sanitize workstation area including tables, shelves, walls grills, broilers, fryers, pasta cookers, sauté burners, convection oven, flat top range, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Prepare a variety of foods, such as meats, vegetables, or desserts, according to customers' orders or supervisors' instructions, following approved procedures in broilers, ovens, grills, fryers, and a variety of other kitchen equipment.
  • Uses the Standard Recipe Card for preparing all products; does not rely on the memory of oneself or others.
  • Weigh or measure ingredients.
  • Portion according to standard portion sizes and recipe specifications and wrap the food or place it directly on plates for service to guests.
  • Wash, peel, and cut various foods, such as fruits and vegetables, to prepare for cooking or serving.
  • Stir and strain soups and sauces.
  • Store food in designated containers and storage areas to prevent spoilage.
  • Take and record the temperature of food and food storage areas, such as refrigerators and freezers.
  • Place food trays over food warmers for immediate service or store them in refrigerated storage cabinets.
  • Receive and store food supplies, equipment, and utensils in refrigerators, cupboards, and other storage areas.
  • Assist cooks and kitchen staff with various tasks as needed and provide cooks with needed items.
  • Carry food supplies, equipment, and utensils to and from storage and work areas.
  • Promptly inform supervisors when equipment is not working properly and when food and supplies are getting low, and order needed items.
  • Remove trash and clean kitchen garbage containers.
  • Complete opening and closing checklists and assist others in opening and closing the kitchen.
  • Attending all scheduled employee meetings and offering suggestions for improvement.
  • Coordinate with and assist fellow employees to meet guests’ needs and support the operation of the restaurant.
  • Adhere to all company safety and sanitation policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, procedures, and laws including health and safety standards.

Major Responsibilities / Specific Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively with management, guests, and hourly staff.
  • Knife Skills and knowledge of food safety and regulations, and food temperature is a must.
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Be available to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
  • Promote the culture, values, and mission of Restaurant K.

Physical Requirements:

  • Be able to reach, bend, and frequently lift 30 pounds.
  • Must have the stamina to work a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Must be able to stand for periods of up to eight (8) hours.
  • Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds at a time.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of 1 year of kitchen preparation and cooking in a casual dining restaurant is a plus but not required.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to acquire a valid Texas Food Handler Card within 30 days of hiring.
